Combining photos – either vertically or horizontally – is a great way to make your photos stand out and show off your photo editing skills. Some people even have fun during the photo editing process, so much so, that it’s become a hobby. But how can you combine photos? How can you make them look good when you do? This article is going to break down the exact ways to do it, so that when you’re done reading, you can immediately start editing photos to combine them and make them look gorgeous.
So, how do you combine photos on a Mac? It’s easier than you may think. Mac computers already have the editing software that you need to use built into their systems, so you don’t even have to download or buy an extra app to do it with if you don’t want to. You can edit photos using the preview app in simple steps that this article will break down for you (and don’t worry; the steps this article will walk you through will apply for both vertical and horizontal photo-combinations).
Combine Photos by using Preview
1) Opening Picture One
The first thing you want to do is open Picture One in the preview app. You’ll click edit and select all, then hit copy so that you use a copy of the picture, rather than the original version of it.
Secondly, you need to select tools and then adjust the size of the picture inside the preview app, which makes plenty of room for the second picture along with it. After that, you need to select the width box, ensure the scale proportionally is unchecked, and type in the size that you want both pictures to be – remember to type in the width for both photos, not just one of them (if the picture was 300 pixels wide, you would need to make the total picture 900 pixels in the width box. Height works the same way.
3) Adding Picture One
The third step you want to do is click edit, and then paste the picture you copied earlier. You’ll want to move it all the way to one side, or to the top or bottom, depending on whether you’re combining the pictures vertically or horizontally. Remember, do not close the preview window when you’re done with this step.
4) Adding Picture Two
In a new window, open the second picture in the preview app. Click edit, select all, and then copy it. Once you do this, you’ll need to head back over to the preview window that has your first picture inside it, paste the second picture, and move it to the empty place – either the other side or up or down, depending on whether you’re editing them vertically or horizontally.
And that’s it for the preview app on Mac, but how else can you combine images?
Combine Photos by using PhotoShop
Another app you can use on the Mac is PhotoShop, but using it doesn’t have to be complicated or hard to understand.
1) Opening A New Document
Choose file and then select new. You’ll want to choose a new document type, whether web or paper is up to you. This depends on whether you’re going to use the picture online or in print; for online use, click web, and for print, choose paper. When you’re done, click okay.
2) Adding The Picture
First, add and resize the picture that will be going in the background. Choose a picture from your Mac into the document. You’ll also drag the handles around the edges to resize the entire picture across the entire document. If you press and hold the Shift button while you’re resizing, it will constrain the picture to its original proportions.
3) Adding Other Images
Next, you’ll add more images onto the document by dragging them from your Mac and over to it. If they overlap, that’s perfectly fine because it can be fixed later on. Each picture is now a separate layer, so you can view them individually in the Layers panel on the right side of the screen. If you can’t see the layers panel, click Window and then Layers. You can also move different pictures in front or behind others to be more or less visible. You’ll use the layers panel to move one picture in front or behind another. Here, you can also show or hide certain photos in the document.
4) Resizing and Moving
To move a picture, go to the layers panel and then select the move tool to position it on a different place in the document. If you would like to resize it, choose the layer of the picture you want to resize, press Command + T on your keyboard to show the handles. Drag them to resize however you want and then move each picture around until you’re happy with how they look.
Select an image layer in the Layers panel, and then use the Move tool to reposition the image on the canvas. To resize an image, select the layer, and then press Control+T (Windows) or Command+T (Mac OS) to show the handles. Drag the handles to resize the image. Reposition each image to create a unique layout. Play around with the composition until you’re happy with how it looks.
Combine Photos by using PhotoStitcher
PhotoShop and Preview aren’t the only apps you can use to combine photos on a Mac. There’s one more and it’s called Photo Stitcher.
1) Select pictures and add to PhotoStitcher
Choose the pictures you want to use from the folder they’re in and then put them onto the PhotoStitcher pad.
2) Choose Stitching Options
Pick and choose what kind of stitching options you want to use, then you get to sit back, relax, and let the app do all the work of combining your photos together.
3) Change the Clip Rect
Once you click stitch, then you can change the cropping rect if you need to, or the app can actually auto crop for you. Or, if you want to, you can fill in black areas with the auto fill feature.
That’s it! Combining photos vertically or horizontally is really just that simple. It doesn’t take a professional but after using these simple apps and programs, your combined images will look like they were professionally done. Have fun and show off your beautiful pictures!
